Early Childhood Pioneer
Bernard Van Leer

The Bernard Van Leer Foundation was founded in 1949, though its base is in the Netherlands, its first international grant-making project began in Jamaica in 1966. The founder, unlike our previous pioneers, was a Dutch circus-master, industrialist and philanthropist. His foundation has three major goals: improve opportunities for children 0-8 raised in socially and economically challenging environments, reducing violence in young children's lives and raising early childhood education on the political agenda. Currently the foundation has expanded their services to countries such as Brazil, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Peru, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda and the European Union.

A Day of Radical Love In Honor Of
Dr. Zerish Mattis Easton

From one of JAMPACT's Major Supporter:

"Greetings friends and family,
As we approach March 26, the 3rd anniversary of our mom's transition from this life to the next, my brothers and sister (Cal, Marlon, Nadine) and I are reaching out to you as we have each year to invite you into a radical and intentional day of love, care and compassion.

Over the past three years we have been moved, rocked and touched by the beauty of what people have done to celebrate our mom's life with us through deliberate acts of care, compassion and love. So, this year again, we ask the same. Please take a moment on March 26 (or any time during this month) to do something intentionally and radically loving to care for someone else.

We ask too, that you share this message and request with your own friends and family so that we can collectively create a legacy of love and care that spreads as far as possible.

In abiding love and gratitude,
Jacquie, Nadine, Marlon and Cal"

Home Visiting Programs and Early Childhood Education

"International research has confirmed that quality early childhood provisions can make a vast difference in the lives of children and that such provisions have the most significant impact for the economically deprived."

In Jamaica, over twenty percent of births are to mother's between the ages of 15-19. In this issue we look at other initiatives throughout the island aiming to impact the lives of young children and who provide early childhood education. The Roving Caregiver's program is a home visiting nurse service that began in Clarendon in 1992 designed to support Jamaica's young mothers. This program teaches teenage mothers how to stimulate their infants through play, childhood development and parent education. Each Rover is assigned to thirty families. These families are also unable to afford daycare and or underestimate the significance of education in a child's development. As a result the importance of early education is enforced in each interaction with every family. Visit the links below to read more about the Rover home visiting program or home visiting programs and its impact on marginalized families.
